Applications for rezoning must be submitted by the 15th of each month to be considered on the Fourth Tuesday of the following month unless otherwise listed. Meetings will begin at City Hall at 7:00 pm.

Brief Description of Planning Department 

The City of Auburn Planning Department assists the Mayor and City Council in planning orderly growth and development of the City. The City Planner and staff work closely with the Inspection, Utility, Engineering, Public Works and other divisions to ensure that development guidelines and regulations are followed in the establishment of subdivisions, commercial developments and new zoning areas within incorporated areas of the City.  

The City Planner assists citizens who are in the process of rezoning their property (when the current zoning is not suitable to their needs). All applications for rezoning are then referred to the Planning & Zoning Commission for recommendation and City Council for final determination. Citizens may also contact the Planning Department when they need to get a Conditional or Special Use Permit or Variance. These may be considered when rezoning is not indicated. These are also then referred to the Planning & Zoning Commission and City Council. 

The Planning Department reviews these applications, prepares staff reports, and coordinates the agenda and maintains the minutes for the City Planning & Zoning Commission's meetings. The department is also responsible for presenting staff and the Planning & Zoning Commission's recommendations to the Mayor and City Council. 

The Planning Department assists the City Council in preparing and updating the Comprehensive Plan required by State Law, and with keeping city development guidelines current with the ever-changing State and Federal mandates. 

The Planning Department also works closely with Development Review, Engineering, Utility, Public Works, Building Inspection, Health, Fire, EMA and Administrative Offices. Coordinates and execute reviews of site development plans for commercial building permits, subdivision construction plans and similar development proposals. 

The department maintains copies of the County's Zoning Regulations, Subdivision Regulations, Future Land Use Maps and other Ordinances which may be purchased by the general public (nominal fee to cover printing costs). 

The Planning Department is open from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., (City Hall), Monday through Friday. Walk-ins are welcome, however appointments are recommended for meetings with the City Planner.
