Meet the Mayor
Dear Auburn Citizens,
Welcome to the City of Auburn, please be sure to come back and visit frequently for updates.
Auburn was established in 1892 the city has always been considered progressive with a college in its earlier years, a mill and of course our prized red clay with its deep red color; merchants would ride to Auburn to dye their cloth.
Our City has had slow but steady growth with a current population of 7,600 residents and a projected growth of twenty-thousand residents within the next fifteen years!
While we are excited about growth we also understand that unbridled expansion can be a detriment, nevertheless planned development allows for stability and the preservation of what makes our City attractive, through forecast and preparation we are providing needed infrastructure for controlled growth.
Recently the City has built an impressive library, renovated a passive park, constructed a children’s playground and cleared away very old broken down trailers in order to create additional green space. The city renovated the JD Withers building so that our citizens now have a beautiful facility to use for various activities; we also are beginning classes there so check in often to see what is being offered. We have designated our Downtown area by creating an overlay district. The City hired a Downtown Development Coordinator to make sure our downtown stays alive and active. We are looking for entrepreneur businesses to join us as we grow.
Auburn has several major projects in process this year: 2009
-
Bringing sewer into our downtown encouraging business growth. This project is scheduled to be completed by October.
-
Renovating R.H. Burel Park. This is the park in front of City Hall and holds our “red caboose”.
-
Moving our Public Works Department from our Downtown to a more suitable site thereby opening space for festivals and events.
-
Expanding our ball fields to create a Sports Complex which will include tennis, basketball, volleyball, walking trails and an interactive water fountain. This will be accomplished in phases with phase one to be completed this year.
-
Auburn is working in conjunction with Gwinnett County, Barrow County, City of Dacula, Town of Carl, City of Winder and Statham to create “The Great Rail Trail”. The Trail will encompass Highway 29 beginning at the 316 intersection and run approximately 22 miles through to Statham. The bike lanes will be enhanced in each jurisdiction with Crape Myrtles and other bushes and plants. We look forward to a great partnership as this region continues to grow and flourish!
-
City-wide landscaping and beautification. Deep red Crape Myrtles, Japanese maples, lantana, knock out roses!
-
Renovations to some city owned buildings so they will be in compliance with our overlay architectural guidelines.
Additionally the city has a new development going in called “Auburn Station”, this is a special zoning called a PSV or Planned Suburban Village. Apartments, shops, trails, restaurants and more will be coming into the city, we are proud to have this new development.
As you can see we are quite busy in Auburn with lots planned and many new projects underway you can bet that we are preparing for the upcoming growth with a great plan of action, a superb staff and elected officials that truly see a vision for our beautiful city!
Stop by and visit, we would love to share our vision and plans with you.
Sincerely,
Linda Blechinger
Mayor, City of Auburn
